December Mecum Collector Car Auction is one of the best-ever in Kansas City.

Mecum Auctions held a collector car auction last Friday and Saturday, December 4 and 5, at Bartle Hall in Kansas City.  It was one of the most impressive events of its kind in this area in Many years.  Great cars, big crowds, and big money was the order of the day.

One interesting comparison came in the form of a couple of 1961-model GM convertibles.  One was a refreshing, light blue Impala, sporting a 283 with a single carburetor and a Powerglide transmission.  The other was a black Pontiac Catalina with a tri-carb, 267-hp 389 and Pontiac eight-lug aluminum wheels.  The Chevy was only three cars ahead of the Poncho on the block.

My dad asked which one I thought would sell higher.  My instinctive reaction was to pick the Chevy.  All things being equal, Chevys always bring more than Pontiacs, right?  Still, the more I thought about it, I realized everything wasn't equal.  The answer was under the hood.  In spite of the striking appearance of the popular Impala, those three carburetors are hard to beat.

Ultimately, the Catalina was the winner.  It sold for a cool $42,000, while the Impala was a no-sale at $36,000.

The auction had the usual allotment of muscle cars, Corvettes, and Shelby Mustangs.  There were also plenty of hot rods, customs, sports cars, even the occasional odd-ball that you can't really classify.  There really was something for everybody.
